Students of English develop excellent analytic, reading, and writing skills, which are assets in almost any career. Critical readers and writers are required in many professions, including business, law, medicine, politics, and public service. More directly, the study of English leads to careers in teaching or to careers that involve writing and research, including advertising, journalism, publishing, and public relations.

English 1 is a first-year course that covers the principles and practices of literary study, introducing students to research skills, literary criticism, the importance of historical and cultural contexts, and to reading a variety of novels, short stories, poems, or plays.

Indigenous Literatures and Cultures introduces students to literary and cultural texts by a range of Native Canadian and American authors, with a focus on texts produced during and after the 1960s.

Screen Studies offers an in-depth introduction to screen studies, a field that encompasses not simply cinema and television, but also considers other forms of moving image production and distribution:  from artists’ video and the expanded screens of the art gallery to apps, videogames and other contemporary online audio-visual formats.

Picture Books for Children explores the varied and complex relationships between illustration and written text in children’s books.
